Hi, I'm Kathryn (she/her/hers)
I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), adhering to their ethical code and committed to working in a respectful, non-judgmental and confidential environment.
I’m a humanistic, existential counsellor in Cardiff, offering trauma-informed, inclusive counselling for adults who are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, low, disconnected from themselves or others or who may be experiencing loss or grief.
I offer in-person counselling in Cardiff as well as online sessions across the UK. Many people I work with are based locally and are looking for a counsellor in Cardiff who offers a calm, relational, and affirming space to talk.
My work is grounded in the belief that you are the expert on your own life. Rather than diagnosing or trying to “fix” you, counselling offers space to slow down, reflect, and explore what your experiences mean for you.
I work with many people who identify as LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent (including ADHD and autism), or who have experienced trauma, long-term stress, or feeling misunderstood. You don’t need a diagnosis or a clear explanation — it’s enough to feel that something isn’t quite right.
Sessions are collaborative, non-judgmental, and shaped around your needs. We’ll work at a pace that feels safe, focusing on meaning, choice, emotional awareness, and how you relate to yourself and the world around you.
Specialties / Issues I work with include:
• Anxiety and panic
• Trauma and complex trauma including PTSD/C-PTSD
• Grief and loss (bereavement, ambiguous loss, identity loss, complicated grief)
• Stress and burnout
• Depression and low mood
• Neurodivergent experiences (ADHD, autism)
• LGBTQIA+ identity, sexuality, and gender
• Shame, self-esteem, and inner criticism
• Relationship and attachment difficulties
• Feeling stuck, numb, or overwhelmed
My practice is trauma-informed, meaning emotional safety, choice, and consent are central to how we work. This is especially important for people seeking counselling in Cardiff after difficult or overwhelming experiences.
I’m neurodiversity-affirming and adapt therapy to different communication styles, sensory needs, and ways of processing. I also offer LGBTQIA+ affirming counselling, where identities are respected and never pathologized.
My Experience
I have experience counselling for universities as well as domestic violence and bereavement charities. Currently, I work for a charity supporting survivors of sexual violence and abuse.
I am an affiliated member of the Institute of Welfare (www.instituteofwelfare.com) and regularly contributed to their magazine 'Welfare World' and attended their professional development days.
I'm also a professional member of the Creative Counsellors community, enabling me to be part of a values-led and creative community but also to continue to find new ways of reflecting, understanding and experiencing our mind and body.
My Training and Learning
I enjoy learning and feel that it is important as a Therapist that I keep learning and developing to ultimately benefit you, the client. In the past few years I have attended workshops on trauma, existential anxiety during COVID-19, gender (to understand and learn further to support gender diverse identities) relational depth, developing existential courage and resilience and also trained with the Foundation for Infant Loss, developing my skills in grief and trauma surrounding pregnancy and infant loss. I have also undertaken training in trans awareness and inclusivity to develop my skills and knowledge in supporting those in the community.
I have undertaken training in the Dream Completion Technique with Dr Justin Havens to help provide support for nightmares from traumatic experiences as well as exploring trust in child sexual abuse from a person-centred perspective with Dr Susanna Alyce.
I have also undertaken training in working with male survivors of sexual abuse with Jeremy Sachs and LGBTQI+ Intimate Partner Violence with Stephen Maxwell.
I have attended a two day course with Alex Drummond and New Pathways on working with transgender and gender questioning clients.
Most recently, I have participated in training with Dominic Davies and The Brighton Therapy Partnership on Gender, Sexuality, Relationship and Diversity (GSRD).
Training has also been undertaken to enable to become an autism informed practitioner.
I'm also very excited that I now offer Trauma Informed Film Therapy. See my blog below for more information.
